first and only printing of this version and likely the smallest limitation of any Olympia Press edition. According to the publisher, Maurice Girodias, in 1958 5,000 sets of sheets for the first edition of Candy were printed in Paris and 3,000 bound up for sale. When the book was shortly thereafter banned (and many destroyed) by the French government, Girodias reset the first signature, changing the opening text, introductory quote, dedication, copyright notice, and title, with a new green card wrapper to match in order to fool the censors. The balance of the book retained the original sheets, including the 1958 colophon. The book was very popular, leaving few copies in very fine condition or without an altered price. An uncommonly nice surviving example. Co-author Southern's influence and appeal was such that he was one of the personages selected for inclusion in the cover montage of The Beatles 1967 album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
